Here we go, another year and another giant onion attempt. Now I’m not expecting miracles or a new world record or anything like that, but as long as I improve on last year’s paltry 1.76 pounder I will be happy with the progress.

I am doing a number of things differently this year, including hedging my bets a little and having some in the greenhouse and some outside in different environments. I also have a second species to try – the Ailsae (a cross between Kelsae and Ailsa Craig). I will also be growing last years species too – Ailsa Craig.

The first stage is now complete, with the seeds tucked away in their propagator, they were sown on Saturday the 22nd January. As of today (27th Jan) I have seen the first sign of life, an Ailsae has broken through the soil! A 5 day propagation time must be a good sign of things to come!?

23rd March – The onions haven’t quite made the progress I had hoped by this time of the year and to be honest I have already been thinking about next years plan of attack! I think the early lack of a heated propagator and light source as early as late November has hampered my progress. I now have my heated propagator and have found the right type of light source that I have yet to buy.

I will still continue on with years to try to beat last years weight though. This is the latest progress…
